Just another ________ in the wall!
I call this one the "Ultimate Puzzle" shot, my mom would have spent days and daze working on a puzzle like this.....
Hope your weekend is filled with joy.....enjoy!
We took this shot fairly early in the day, direct sunlight clear sky's, this is a tech tip I found along the way....I was set on direct sun exposure on the camera at ISO 100 so the long distance shots are real crisp as the geese moved closer and closer to us the wall they put up as they had a mass ascension darkend the frame so much I went to ISO 400, I found them to be much easier to process, that move took away all the dark shadows between the birds dark wings and white bodies......take a look at the largest size possible and you will see the difficulty in processing one may have, hope this little tech tip will help you someday!
The wall of geese are about 100 yards out I cropped the bottom of the shot because the large amount of water detracts from the shot, I like cropped shots or the pano view I find they sell better than a full frame shots, a pano shot allows you to do more with the matting and frame selection I have found, my personal viewpoint....thanks for yours!
I only saw one impact death from birds colliding in mid-air while we were there, what I found amazing was when the mature adult goose hit the ground it buried in about six inches deep near some people down the way from us, It would have certainly done bodily harm if it had made impact with a human. We traveled the extent of the road system in the refuge and saw hundreds of geese littering the ground from mid-air impacts, attrition in nature they call that.
Thanks for the great questions and comments.....I try to answer all your questions here later in the day as time permits.snow geeseanimalsbirdssquaw creek national wildlife refugemissouriwww.photoperson.comphotopersonpictureperson

Middle falls in the rain....
On our trip up to triple falls North Carolina we swept past a open spot in the trees here I was able to shoot a shot of the middle fall of triple falls, I have been working on this one for a while it's hard to get the rain out of the shot over such a long distance.
This is a single exposer in the rain, the fall is a quarter of a mile out.
Thanks for all the great comments on yesterdays pic that was fun. Hope you enjoy your Friday!www.photoperson.comphotopersontriple fallsnorth carolinafallswaterfall

Dueling Paul's.....
Went to the now world famous grindstone area this weekend for the first time ever with Paul Jr and Linda, I must say for such an urban area it has so much to see and enjoy for sure. Paul receives his PhD. within the next month or so, he will be the first in our family tree to have accomplished this....quite an achievement, we are sure proud, seems like just yesterday you were my co-pilot in diapers flying the friendly sky's. Keep the passion for photography, it will take you to the ends of the earth.....tuck that shirt in before you go.....love ya!
Thanks Donna I was hoping he would use that as his new blog name....

Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge......Two million birds and counting, ten thousand new birds an hour arriving now daily. This is a small flight, we had a huge flock lift off within one hundred yards from us, it was louder than a locomotive, it was one of the most spectacular natural events I have ever witnessed. No processing of this shot, we are on the road.....enjoy!

Fall Barn on the rolling hills of Wisconsin.
Dotted across the carpet of fall foliage that is America many miles from nowhere we stumble across this fantastic view. Again we are in search of an elusive gristmill that we cannot find. We are way out in the countryside, frustrated and OK we probably smell for it has been days since we have had visited a hotel our clothes hold the lingering smell of last nights campfire. Sitting on the tailgate I enjoy the smooth scent of mustard that garnishes my bologna sandwich Linda has prepared for me as we formulate a plan of attack, it's getting late and time is short we need to locate this mill. Round and round the map goes, where could this gristmill be.....17FEB2012
Downstream......
Many years past the beavers now gone the dam now yields large trees and diverts the water left to make a new course for the river to flow. This area of Wisconsin is so remote the animals are not afraid of humans, we are forty miles from the nearest house and have traveled to this spot on what seemed like boulders and sand only to arrive at a fifty foot cliff, a mile hike and wha-la this is what you walk out to. A small waterfall is just behind me the sun blazing on my back I set up the tripod.... I hope Linda has not seen the what is moving the bushes in the distance. Halfway here we passed a group of stunned hunters all on four wheelers rifles strapped to their racks guiding the group of city folks, It's bear season and we can hear the many dogs baying to their masters in the deep woods. Places like this yield some of the largest beaver and badger pelts in America, the small country stores we frequented on this trip are like big game trophy showcases luring the city folks back for the hunt of a lifetime16FEB2012
New man on the block.....
First time out of the nest this newbee male Cardinal shadows Mom and Dad to the feeding area of the backyard, Although his hair and feathers are not in place yet they get around with few stumbles. We also have new Bluejays also....they look even worse when they first fly.12FEB2012
The Eroding Coast......
This section of the Wisconsin shoreline is one of my favorite areas to visit, it offers staggering views and unparalleled fall foliage when in season. The caves water has eroded away are a kayaker's dream, the sharp edge and beautiful water draw all who come here right to the edge. While here on this stunning fall evening hundreds gathered in the park just behind the trees, there is a hiking trail that follows the coast in either direction from this point. This shot took about an hour to get as so many people are enjoying the thundering waves crashing into the caves, I prefer not to have people in my images so I just wait, this is a hand held shot, just behind me there are about fifty people clamoring on the jagged limestone plateau. I am knee deep in the cold waters of lake Superior and Linda is again not happy with the risk to reward ratio of this shot, the water doesn't seem bad in this shot, it even looks calm, but the lake was producing four foot rollers during my escapade over the edge. Most of the passerby's were content with my plight, for the Wisconsin Badgers had just spanked us Huskers hard the weekend prior....of course I was wearing my Husker sweatshirt. Most people think you are incapable of rational thought when they see something like this, some even ask what you are doing or if I need help, I usually tell them the kind of help I need they couldn't give me but thanks anyway....they laugh and wander off....usually into my shot.
Thanks for all your wonderful comments and questions....08FEB2012
First light at Glade Creek Mill......
Some say this is the most photographed gristmill in America I would have to agree for the last thirty or so years. Marbry Mill has been around for a lot longer and has been documented in photos for a great while longer than Glade Creek. Glade Creek is just a stunning place to visit, great people at the Babcock State Park make this destination fun and interesting the park is beautifully kept and offers trails, bike paths, camping, fishing, kayaking any sort of outdoor recreation.
The New River George area is a top tier recreation area that offers beautiful surroundings around every corner. A favorite destination for me I have visited many times in all seasons and yet it still draws me back. This is the last shot I took before my fall that broke the lens off my camera body. I am a Gristmill enthusiast and have drug my children to many many mills, often at their displeasure, I belong to the great organization called SPOOM the Society for the Preservation Of Old Mills, they can be found at http://www.spoom.org. To date I have circumnavigated America to photograph over three hundred of these gristmill sites. Most of the Gristmills today are in serious decay or in ruins, hard to believe, our American heritage goes back to the many gristmills that started most of our communities today. Gristmills were the Mall of America in its heyday they were the meeting places Americans traded goods or had their toils changed to useful and tradable commodities, for products, for consumption. These Gristmills were the engines that made America prosper and grow, if you are lucky enough to have one close by visit your heritage, help renovate these treasures before its to late.
I hope someday to write a book about these wonderful American treasures that sit in your backyard, there is no image that depicts the American heritage more to me than a great image of a waterwheel on the side of a building, they normally rest near beautiful rivers and streams forgotten by their passerby's only to become dilapidated and bulldozed for that bright shinny seven eleven.....sad. Help save a reminder of Americana visit the SPOOM website, tell them I sent ya.....hope you enjoy this image of your past, Americans!
For all the great folks outside America this Gristmill site rests in Babcock State Park a little north and east of Beckley West Virginia, it sits in Appalachia an area rich in American history, the New River is said to be our continents oldest river.
Yes most of these mills are east of the Mississippi, SPOOM offers a directory of these sites for sale and although the directions given in them are scetchy at best remember you are looking for landmarks that have been developed around so some of the landmarks described in the directions to these places no longer exist. There have been many many tanks of gasoline exhausted in my search for some of these gristmills only to be not even close to where they really are, thats how much the area around the mill sites have changed, enjoy your quest Barry, we have met some unbelievable people along the way to find them....most of the people that have them now are like minded of our ancestors, self motivated entrepreneurs wanting to restore American heritage for Americans....thanks for your question.
I do Mills with waterwheels only......Thanks for the great info, I will pass that on! Enjoyed the story Ed.

Our covey in flight....
800mm deep in the backyard the sparrows have all the their food sources covered by the recent snow storm. Our covey lives in the sixty foot blue spruce in my neighbors backyard, we call it the condo, its home to four or five species of bird for the winter months. They anxiously wait for me to throw out the food to them, sometimes they have to remind me so they come up to the sliding glass door and taunt the cat into hitting the glass with her paw.
Thanks so much for commenting.05FEB2012

Private Falls....
Thanks for the great comments....snowing heavy since midnight...almost a foot deep, I'm tired of shoveling.
We made a wrong turn and wandered to this fall that sat on private land, it was seriously posted for trespassers...it was raining quite hard at times during this shoot the equipment got quite wet and the banking was real steep on the sides and behind this shot was quite a gorge if I slipped I would be down stream quickly.02Feb2012
Have just a few more shots left of the airshow....today I start processing some of the tougher shots I have taken from our trips to Wisconsin and North Carolina.
Thanks go out to Linda, without her these don't get to you, and Paul Jr who keeps on pushing me to process......I find that to be the worse part.
Thanks to all ya'll.....for taking the time out of your busy day to look at what I brung home.......most of the time when I was a kid we'd bring home stuff Mom wouldn't let us in the house with, she'd like these.
Let me know how I can help, thanks for the great questions!blue angelsaircraftairplanevehiclesphotopersonlincoln nebraska

Big Beautiful Doll
This shot was just after a simulated bombing run, the other planes in the group were ahead and laid down the bombs prior to the Big Beautiful Doll strafing the ground here with small arms fire from the wing mounted guns. The smoke it was flying through was real dense and the craft is very low, I had to crop some heads out on the bottom of the pic. I have taken many shots at these air shows in the manual mode but lets face it, your panning on a target that is moving at a blistering pace, with changing light conditions through the shot. So the trick I have found when you are shooting action is quite simple....don't go in hard on the item you are trying to get a shot of, actually make the camera work for you, take a wider than normal shot and take the frame down in processing rather than in the field.
So the plane is rather far away in the original shot at 200mm, more importantly here though it is in focus....thats because the pan speed is correct to the speed of the plane, thats the most important thing to remember....if the pan speed is wrong....your shot is out of focus....everytime. So, I am not a big fan of autofocus, but in these conditions you just have to much going on to get the shot, try panning something today, its not as hard as you think but it is the thing that makes the difference in an action shot.....everytime.
I wish I was flying a plane but no I am on the ground.
Phil....those people are looking for the shot they want to see....I tend to see what you give me, your perspective, not what I am looking for, thats why all the work you do is great....it's your perspective that counts.....everytime!
Looks almost fake...another airshow shot from this summer.
